WHAT IS ULCERATIVE COLITIS

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects the lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. It causes inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the digestive tract, leading to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea (often with blood or pus), fatigue, weight loss, and urgency to defecate. The severity of the disease can range from mild to severe, with periods of flare-ups and remission.

The exact cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown, but it is believed to involve an abnormal immune response, genetics, and environmental factors. Treatment typically involves medications to reduce inflammation, control symptoms, and, in some cases, surgery. There is no cure, but proper management can help many patients lead normal, healthy lives.
